Latin America and Australia have not traditionally been close partners – the second half of the 20th Century saw little to no diplomatic relations between the two regions due to rife political instability in the former that dissuaded any attempt at developing closer relations. The 1990s onward saw increased stability in many Latin American nations and increased diplomatic engagement with the region…By facilitating Latin American business involvement in the region and drawing specialised goods, crisis resolution training and defence resources and knowledge, Australia may take a leading role in the continued economic and security development of the Indo-Pacific in a manner like Singapore. This would have the effect of reaffirming Australia’s traditional identity as a regional leader and stem the influx of Chinese influence.
