The Tyrrell Perspective
Strategy, intelligence and the view from Britain
Commodore Pat Tyrrell OBE RN (Ret.)
SAGE International Associate
The Tyrrell Perspective brings the experience of a former Royal Navy Commodore, submariner and senior defence intelligence practitioner to the strategic challenges confronting Britain and its partners.
Drawing on a career spanning submarine operations, NATO, defence intelligence, information warfare and strategic consultancy, Pat Tyrrell examines contemporary security from the perspective of someone who has spent decades considering how states understand threats, prepare for them — and sometimes fail to do either.
His commentary for SAGE focuses particularly on British and European strategy, maritime security, intelligence, NATO, technological change and the evolving character of international competition.
ABOUT PAT TYRRELL
Commodore Patrick J. Tyrrell OBE RN (Ret.) is a SAGE International Associate and former senior Royal Navy officer whose career encompassed submarine operations, NATO, defence intelligence and the emerging information-security challenges of the post-Cold War era.
Joining the Royal Navy in 1976, he qualified as a submariner and sonar specialist, serving in both Polaris ballistic-missile and attack submarines. His later career took him into the NATO environment, where he worked at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) on implementing the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe arrangements and developing NATO’s equipment-transfer programme. His work was recognised with appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
Tyrrell later served as Commander of the United Kingdom’s Defence Intelligence and Security School. During this period he became closely involved in the emerging field of open-source intelligence and its application to NATO and military decision-making, contributing to early thinking about how rapidly expanding information technologies were changing intelligence, security and warfare.
Following his Royal Navy career, he became Director of Vale Atlantic Associates, working across strategic consultancy, cyber and information warfare, security, intelligence analysis and technologies relevant to defence and intelligence.
He has written and commented on British defence and security, NATO, maritime strategy, intelligence, AUKUS and Indo-Pacific security.
